Bilkeshwar Mahadev Temple in Haridwar

So much is the belief of the people in Lord Shiva, wherever you go, you find a place dedicated to the God. The Bilkeshwar Mahadev Temple is yet another place which is dedicated to Lord Shiva. As the story told by the board situated outside the temple, Parvati appeased Lord Shiva under the Bilva tree, hence the name of the temple. The God, pleased with the prayers of Parvati, blessed her and agreed to take her as his wife. Henceforth, the temple came into existence.

The ancient temple is very popular among the local crowd. The place is quite remote, and you will have to go uphill to visit the shrine.

Bilkeshwar Mahadev Temple Haridwar Location

It is a small temple which, along with the normal shiva linga, houses a shiva linga and nandi made out of stone. The place also houses small temples of the Lord Ganesha, Lord Hanuman, Mahadev and Mata Rani.

It is a tradition to offer Bilwa leaves to Lord Shiva and to do abhishek of the shiva linga with the water of River Ganga.

The road to the temple also has a Hanuman temple before the Bilkeshwar temple. The temple has emerged as a favourite weekend tourist spot owing to its location on the uphill.

How to Reach Bilkeshwar Mahadev Temple in Haridwar


Nearest Railway Station: Haridwar Railway Station. The temple is at a road distance of 34 kms from the station. The rentals available will cost approximately 400 INR for a journey from the station to the temple.

From the Railway Station, head towards the Nirmala Chhwani Road and turn to right at the Surendra Provision Store. Take a left at the blood bank where you pass the Mela Hospital on the right. Turn a slight right at the Bilkeshwar Nagar Police Chowki, and you find the temple on the left.

Nearest Airport: Delhi International Airport and Dehradun Local Airport. The temple is situated at 36 kms from the local Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun. The rental cars will take you from the airport to the temple in approximately 420 INR.

From the airport, head in the south direction towards the Dehradun-Rishikesh Road. Take the first right where you pass by the Darpan Studio on the left. Take a left and move on to the Dehradun-Haridwar road where you cross the Balaji Petrol Pump. Turn right at the Nepali Farm and you cross another Petrol Pump. Take the third exit the roundabout and you see the Hanuman Mandir on the left. Turn right at the Sharvan Nath Nagar Police Traffic Chowki. Take the first left where you pass the Mela Hospital on the right. Turn a slight right at the Bilkeshwar Nagar Police Chowki, and you find the temple on the left.

Depending on your travel plan, whether you take a tour package or take a private car for the travel, you can also visit Haridwar after completing your tour of the Rishikesh city.

From Rishikesh: Head northwards towards NH 58. Turn left at the Ganga Resort Tourist Complex, where you pass by the Petrol Pump on the left. Take third exit at the roundabout where you cross the Hanuman Mandir on the left. Turn right at the Sharvan Nath Nagar Police Traffic Chowki. Take the first left where you pass the Mela Hospital on the right. Turn a slight right at the Bilkeshwar Nagar Police Chowki, and you find the temple on the left.

Best time to visit
The period from May to November is the most favourable to visit the city of Haridwar. The temple timings are from 6 am to 9 pm, and the visit to the temple can be completed in approximately 20 minutes. Photography is allowed.
